“I love to see what happens when you fuse or slump the glass. There are times when the project does not go the way I want, but other times it turns out so much better.”

Deb Achgill says she always liked working with glass, but a full-time job kept her busy until the day she visited an artist co-op, saw some fused glass work, asked some questions, and caught the bug — the fused glass bug, that is.

“I took one class and started ordering fusible glass,” the Lafayette-based artist says. “The next step was to get a kiln to start fusing my own items.”

Not long after, an Indiana delegation planned an overseas business-building trip, and asked Deb for handmade glassware to share as gifts from the Hoosier state.

“It really makes me happy when people tell me they enjoy my items or they received a piece of my glass as a gift,” she says.

Fused glass work allows Deb to experiment with new colors of glass and to make a wide variety of functional items, and she says that’s the part of this genre she enjoys most.

“I love to see what happens when you fuse or slump the glass,” she says. “There are times when the project does not go the way I want, but other times it turns out so much better.

“Every piece of my work is cut and placed in the kiln by hand,” she explains. “I love to tell people how the items are made and the time it takes to make the pieces.”

Having grown up on an Indiana farm, Deb has a patience for, and a willingness to take on, hard work. “I do the best job I can, and I create a quality product. That’s how I was raised,” she says.

And that’s why she was recognized by the State as an Indiana Artisan.

“I was thrilled to have my work accepted. I am very proud to be an Indiana Artisan,” Deb says.
