Good workmanship means as much as good design to metal jewelry-maker Janet R. Webb, who uses her hands and assorted pliers, hammers, torches and saws to shape and manipulate sterling silver sheet metal, wire, and copper into contemporary designs.

“Texture is achieved by acid etching, hammering and stamping. Color is added to my pieces with kiln-fired vitreous enamel. I hand-make chains and most of my findings: ear wires, toggles and pin backs,” Janet says. “My work is continually changing and growing.”

The full-time artist started working in metals, mostly sterling silver, about 25 years ago. She initially explored the world as a glass artist, but then started researching how to use glass in metal jewelry after she and her husband took classes in Gatlinburg, Tenn.

Today, Janet handcrafts her jewelry creations in her home studio in Marion, IN. She calls her studio “my happy place,” and says she truly misses interacting with the public and bouncing ideas off of customers at local art fairs.

“I live in nature, so my backyard is my inspiration,” says Janet, a lifelong Indiana resident. “With all of the art fairs shut down, everybody needs a happy place.”

As a member of the Orchard Gallery in Fort Wayne, Janet shows her work there, along with attending various art fairs throughout the year.
