Nancy Goodwine-Wozniak

For the majority of Nancy Goodwine-Wozniak’s career, she’s worked as an obstetrician and gynecologist, helping women in the Midwest bring precious lives into the world. Today, she’s giving life to a few of her own creations.

As a self-taught 2D artist working in colored pencils and pastels, the Fishers resident has always loved art, but never had the time to focus on it before, since working as an obstetrician for the past 20 years and raising her own family took much of her time.

Focusing more intently on her art for the past five years, Nancy moved to Indiana from the Champaign-Urbana area of Illinois in 2017. As she drives the back roads into work every day as a physician with I.U. Health, Nancy finds inspiration to create as the sun rises over the farm fields.

“The cows, farms, rural area … it’s just the salt of the earth,” she says. “Cows offer no subterfuge. They stand out with no cover in all kinds of weather. Cows are great moms, and they’re the most humble creatures in the world!”

Calling herself “a low-volume gal,” Nancy also finds herself attracted to the colored pencils and pastel medium because she can work on a piece in her own time without worrying about it drying up before she’s finished.

Colored pencils and pastels are considered “a painting,” she says, as long as the artwork covers the entire paper. Hers do, with general landscape themes, barns and farm animals taking center stage.

“I like colored pencils for their precision and mixing colors on paper, and the pastel colors are so vibrant,” Nancy says. “It can be very tedious and takes a long time to complete. But, once the colors are applied, it will keep looking that way for 100 years if you take care of it.”
