Pictures worth a thousand words don’t just happen. They take patience to find the best angle, sometimes throwing caution to the wind to position yourself just right. Then add a little luck, the perfect lighting, and an eye for composition.
Talk one-on-one with three fine-art photographers at Oh, Snap! Stories Behind the Lens. The free, drop-in event will be 1-5 p.m. March 14 at Indiana Artisan Gifts & Gallery, 22 N. Rangeline Road, Carmel. Each photographer has a different style and focus but all of their work is well deserving of the best of Hoosier craftsmanship designation it has earned. Their stories will fascinate and entertain.
Ken Rabbers (image on top of the page), Carmel, enjoys viewing the natural environment in differing light, catching the soft glow of early morning and late evening, eerie fog, star-lit skies or a golden moon. Barns opened the door to Marsha Williamson Mohr’s (image below) decades-long career shooting Indiana rural scenes that include fences, lanes and farmsteads, many near her West Lafayette home. Kendall Reeves (image on bottom of hte page), Bloomington, sidesteps the new and shiny, letting his work focus on Americana and things that are dilapidated or deteriorating — ghost towns, abandoned buildings and old trucks and cars rusting in woods and fields, for instance.

The work of nearly 230 artisans in 57 Indiana counties has been juried and earned the designation Indiana Artisan from the state. Not just a moniker, the honor means their art, food or beverage is among the best of Hoosier craftsmanship. Indiana Artisans include painters, potters, woodworkers, bakers, chocolatiers, vintners, printmakers, jewelry designers, weavers, paper and mixed media artists, leatherworkers, and more.
