In Teaching a Stone to Talk, Annie Dillard paints a poetic picture of a man who keeps a stone on his mantle. A stone which he is teaching to talk. In the Sinai desert water pours forth from stones twice, according to the book of Exodus. For time in memorial humanity has set up stones as witness to their accomplishments and their foibles, from cairns to monolithic structures.
Water from a Stone is a collection of works that began with contemplations of these stories and more. After a decade I am still looking at stones. I am still listening for their cries of “hosanna!”
I have come to realize that stones are only stable to our human gaze. If one could stare at a stone for a billion years you would see it moving like water. Every stone is a flow. If you look for long enough you will see the water pouring forth.
