Dreams may inspire some, while they tend to confuse and haunt others. For Matt Hurdle, one particular dream drove him to start creating in a medium he’d never explored before.

“After taking a break from my pen and ink art to pursue my 30-year career with 3M Company, I began painting contemporary landscapes and abstract art in 2016,” Matt says. “I was having vivid, recurring dreams of painting, a medium that was never my focus during school. I picked up an easel, canvas and paint and haven’t stopped since.”

The retired account executive for a multinational conglomerate corporation finds his own sense of serenity by painting his dreamy abstracts, with titles such as Leave It All Behind, Things Caught in My Mind, Welcome to My World and Stay for Another Dream.

“Painting is my means of meditation,” the Fishers resident says. “I look forward every day to getting to my studio and painting my dreams. It’s calming and exciting at the same time.”

The contemporary landscape artist creates hazy, dreamlike landscapes by using multiple layers of deep, rich earth tones and soft-blended brushstrokes.

“My dreamy, hazy style isn’t often found in the Midwest. It’s a very European style of painting landscapes and seascapes,” Matt says. “I enjoy creating artwork that elicits a feeling of calm and serenity. People seem to really relate to my work in a positive way.”

A 2018 Artists Magazine Annual Art Competition Finalist, Matt appreciates the prestige that comes with being selected as an Indiana Artisan and the connections he’s made with other talented artisans.

“I’m proud to be part of such a highly regarded Indiana tradition and I continue to push myself to be a better artist,” he says.
