Wayne Gaydos’ dedication to art and community exemplifies the spirit of Indiana artisanship, creating a legacy that celebrates the natural world while encouraging future generations.
Inspired by his father, who was a master carpenter, Wayne initially embraced woodworking, designing and crafting furniture and artistic pieces. His journey took a significant turn in California, where he studied under renowned builders and mastered the techniques to create one-of-a-kind stringed instruments. While woodworking was his first love, the Farmland, Indiana, artist discovered a second calling — clay. He finds that the malleable medium suits his evolving style as he ages. His work is characterized by careful craftsmanship and a commitment to environmental sustainability, with all materials sourced from Indiana businesses, fostering local traditions and practices.

“Indiana’s heritage is mostly about agriculture, and my art reflects that and the need to sometimes assist nature to make sure it’s around for future generations,” he explains.

Outdoor garden/patio lights attract moths that pollinate nearby plants, as well as toads. Bee hotels attract and encourage native, pollinating non-harmful bees to nest for next season. Bird feeders
help the migrating birds feed.

A true artisan, Wayne employs meticulous, handcrafted techniques in his clay pieces. His intricate process includes rolling slabs, cutting, and joining them using the slip-and-score method, followed by air drying and glaze firing—all done by hand, all executed with precision. He creates diversity in his work through layering glazes and using textures inspired by nature, ensuring each piece is unique and artistically sound.

“All of my clay work is built, bisque fired and glazed to withstand outdoor use year-round,” he says. “By using good materials, good designs and solid building techniques, my pieces are unique works of useable art.”
