Terry Dukeman

Terry Dukeman is an accomplished ceramic artist with an impressive five decades of experience. His artistic process begins with shaping his hand-carved mica lamps on the pottery wheel and continues by slip-carving natural motifs such as plants, animals, and landscapes into the clay.

Asian carving styles and sgraffito designs heavily influence Terry’s work. He draws inspiration from both his imagination and the natural world, and he has a keen eye for detail. Each lamp is wheel thrown, individually carved, and has a suitable lid that complements the form.

“In the 1920s, lamps with mica were very popular to those that could afford them. I want to revive that artisan craftsman era,” he explains.

The New Castle artist is committed to creating his glazes. This personal touch ensures that each piece he produces meets his exacting standards for excellence. He is particular about craftsmanship, making sure there are no sharp edges or cracks in any of his artwork. The functional integrity of his pieces is of paramount importance to him.

Terry’s interest in pottery began when he was a Ball State University art education major, specializing in ceramics. This academic foundation armed him with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in both his teaching and art careers. He has shared his zeal for pottery and art with countless students from elementary age through high school.

While he has an extensive list of career accomplishments, he is quick to say that mentoring has been one of his proudest ones. Terry has influenced and guided numerous art students, witnessing their growth and progress as makers.

Throughout his career, Terry’s exceptional talent and contributions to the arts have been recognized. “I am very honored to have my work accepted in Indiana Artisan,” he says.
