Temari has a rich history in Japan but is on the brink of extinction because making the art is such an exacting process. Originally crafted as toys made from shredded kimonos, Temari balls have evolved into a decorative art form. They are now considered symbols of love, esteem and honor, often given to wish the recipient a brilliant and happy life. 

Neelu has not only mastered this art form; the Carmel resident has revitalized it with her unique vision.

“My canvas is a sphere, my medium is thread, and the possibilities are limitless,” she explains. Her fervor for Temari is evident in every meticulously crafted piece. She studied under the guidance of a Japanese Temari master, allowing her to absorb the traditional techniques and skills that form the foundation of this ancient craft. 

Neelu is not content with mere replication. She believes in the intersection of craft, design, sustainability, and revival. In a world where Temari has taken a back seat due to its time-consuming nature, she has taken it upon herself to breathe new life into this art form.

“Keeping the traditional techniques as my base, I have altered and invented new patterns to keep it in sync with the local demand,” Neelu says. She has also embraced sustainability by using locally grown and manufactured materials, giving this Japanese craft made by an Indian American living in Indiana a twist. The result is nothing shy of magic.

Neelu’s work embodies her love for crafting, her respect for tradition, and her commitment to innovation. Each Temari ball is a unique blend of intricate stitching, elaborate embroideries and a multitude of patterns. Her artistry is a testament to the beauty that can be achieved through handcrafted objects, and she invites us all to share in the wonder and joy that her creations bring.
