“I’ve always loved art and as my children got older, I had more time to work at it. Once I got my hands in clay, I never stopped.”

Little did Judy DeGan know when she signed up for a ceramics course in the 1990’s that she was never going to look back. Most of her instruction has been through the Indianapolis Art Center, where she now teaches adult pottery classes.

“My business name, Piece of my Peace Pottery, truly expresses my joy of working with clay. There is something very soothing about feeling the clay under my fingers and responding to my touch. I like that I can share my peace through my creations.” says Judy.

Judy works primarily on the wheel, making stoneware forms based on a tradition of function and use. With a background in weaving and printmaking, she finds textured surfaces particularly inspiring. She creates a balance in her work through large areas of subtle texture balanced with small additions and details. Judy handcrafts a surface design of distinctively carved  leafy botanical  patterns, and then uses iron oxide and glazes that enhance the carving. Glazed pieces are fired in a high-fire reduction kiln to 2300 degrees.

A community of artists can prompt fellow artists to get things done, and they can inspire others to try new things. Some of the greatest ideas are built by experiencing other art and in conversations with other artists.

“Hearing comments about my work encourages me to stretch and grow artistically. I love to see the work of others, not to copy but to give me elements to try in my own work,” says Judy.

A strong support of fellow Indiana artists has played an essential role in Judy’s journey since Day One, whether it be through the Indianapolis Art Center, the Bloomington Local Clay Guild , or the community at-large participating in exhibits and art fairs.

“Everything I take away from these communities becomes part of my work.” adds Judy.

Indiana Artisan represents a cross section of the best artists in Indiana. I wanted to stand alongside these artists and am proud to become part of this elite group. Each year I have been more comfortable jurying into shows. I’ve won a few awards along the way. Mostly I’m proud to have loyal customers who seek me out wherever I go.” says Judy.
