Terry Dukeman’s interest in pottery began during his time at Ball State University, where he was majoring in Art Education with a specialization in ceramics. This academic foundation provided him with the knowledge and

skills needed to excel in both his teaching career and pottery endeavors. He has taught students at various levels, including elementary, intermediate, and high school, sharing his passion for pottery and art with countless students over the years. He has had the privilege of influencing and guiding art students in Henry County, witnessing their growth and progress as makers. This mentoring aspect of his career has been one of his proudest accomplishments.

Terry Dukeman is an accomplished ceramic artist with an impressive five decades of experience in his craft. His artistic process begins with shaping his pieces on the potter’s wheel, and he further enhances them through slip-carving. What sets Terry apart is his exceptional skill in incorporating natural motifs such as plants, animals, and landscapes into his hand-carved mica lamps. One notable aspect of Terry’s artistic practice is his commitment to creating his own glazes. This personal touch ensures that each piece he produces meets his exacting standards for excellence. Terry’s work is heavily influenced by Asian carving styles and sgrato designs. He draws inspiration from both his imagination and the natural world, with a keen eye for detail.

Throughout his career, Terry Dukeman has received recognition for his exceptional talent and contributions to the arts. Some of the highlights of his career include being selected as an outstanding artist in Indiana for the Year of the American Craft in 2003, and participating in the Ball State Alumni Exhibit in 2000. “I am very honored to be accepted into Indiana Artisan alongside other outstanding artists.” says Terry.
